Abstract

1,172,693. Making carbonaceous agglomerates. CONSOLIDATION COAL CO. 16 March, 1967 [28 March, 1966], No. 13571/66. Heading C5E. Agglomerates are made by tumbling in a rotary kiln at elevated temperature a carbonaceous material obtained from a coal feedstock, and a binder obtained from the feedstock, the binder being at least in part a non-distillable coal extract fraction obtained by solvent extraction. The process is applicable to weakly and non-caking coals, and the carbonaceous material is the solid residue separated from the coal extract and carbonized to form a char. After solvent recovery for recycling, the extract is mixed with pitch also obtained from the process, and delivered to the kiln independently of the char, the resulting agglomerates being subsequently calcined. Tar is recovered from the carbonizer, kiln, and calciner, and fractionated to produce the pitch and a distillate of B.R. 230‹ to 400‹ C. which is used as make-up solvent. If the coal is weakly caking, some may be delivered directly to the kiln, and some more may by-pass the extraction step and be passed directly to the carbonizer, (see Fig. 2, not shown). The rotary kiln may be the one described in Specification 1,120,995.
