Abstract

1,103,101. Electric switches. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 28 Aug., 1964 [29 Aug., 1963; 22 Jan., 1964], Nos. 34150/63 and 2704/64. Heading H1N. A snap-action switch comprises a resilient metal blade 1 having two elongated portions 1a, 1c joined by an integral S-shaped spring 1b maintained in compression by a yoke 5 pivoted at 6 and 7 in holes in the portions la+lc respectively. The contact carried by portion Ic is moved between contacts 3 and 4 by raising or lowering either the spring lb or the portion la which is supported at 2. In the energy regulator of Fig. 3, the resilient blade is a bi-metallic strip 21 whose spring 21b is maintained in compression by a wire 22 secured to the contact carrying portion 21c and to an adjustable support spring 27. The contact 24 normally engages a fixed contact 23 to maintain a circuit through the bi-metal 21. On overheating the blade 2 snaps into engagement with a backstop 14. Contact 23 and backstop 14 are carried by spring blades 25 and 26 respectively which engage cam surfaces 13a+ 13b respectively of a cam 13 adjustably mounted on a shaft 9 screwed into a fixed terminal block 12. The shaft 9 also adjusts the spring 27. The arrangement shown in Fig. 5 is similar to that shown in Fig. 1 except that the supported elongated portion 101 is mounted in a support block 113 that is pivoted about an axis 108 perpendicular to the plane of the drawing. The switch is actuated by rotating the support block 113. The switch of Fig. 5 may be incorporated in a time switch, Figs. 7 and 8, not shown, by providing a wedge-shaped projection on the block 113 which is alternately engaged by two cam surfaces of a time-controlled rotary cam. By making one half of the S-shaped spring stiffer than the other half a retractive snap-action switch may be provided.
