110,203. Osborne, F. O. Creagh-, Glew, F. H., Hughes, A. J., and Hushes & Son, H. Oct. 17, 1916. Magnetic compasses.-Cards or dials for liquid compasses, having luminous markings formed of a radium compound and subsequently varnished, are coated with paraffin wax to form a protective layer unaffected by spirit. Transparent cards 1, typically of mica, are provided upon the back with a film 2 whereon are printed, as by photographic means, the outlines of the graduations 4, numerals 3, and letters 5. When these outlines have been filled in with radium compound mixed with varnish, the background 6 is applied by painting, spraying, or dipping, and the card is finally dipped in paraffin wax to form the protective film. Cards or dials having markings upon the front face have the background applied first to the front face, followed by the printing, filling in, and dipping in paraffin wax described above. A similar procedure is followed in the case of markings upon a cylindrical strip for vertical reading.
