Abstract

1,102,081. Work benches. WILLIAM MARPLES & SONS Ltd. 13 Jan., 1967 [19 Jan., 1966], No. 2436/66. Heading B4X. A carpentry working surface comprising a rectangular board 1 provided with means to resist sliding movement when the board is placed on the top of a table or like flat surface, has mutually inclined rows of dowel holes emerging at its upper surface, in combination with a set of dowels for interchangeable engagement in the dowel holes and locatable in suitable positions to bear on the edges of workpieces of various sizes and shapes laid on the surface of the board to provide support against movement of the workpieces. To assist in supporting and locating the workpieces a set of wedges (18), stop strips (19) support strips (20) having projecting dowels and strips (21) having V-notches are provided. To prevent sliding movement of the board two strips 5 are mounted respectively along the undersides of the front and an adjacent side of the board so as to bear against two adjoining edges of the table top. The strips are loosely mounted on bolts 9 provided with wing nuts 8 which enable the board to be clamped to the table top. Non-slip material such as sponge rubber is secured to the underside of the board. Saw guide slits 15 are provided in the raised back 3 of the board.
