Abstract
A thin tightly-adherent colourless coating of SnO2 is formed on the surface of virgin glass, or metal which is used for conveying the virgin glass, by exposing the metal or glass surface at 900-1500 DEG F. to an atmosphere, including SnCl2 vapour in the presence of oxygen. The atmosphere can contain 0.01-2.5% weight SnCl2. The glass article, e.g. sheet, container or tubing, can be advanced through the atmosphere, e.g. on a conveyer (see Figs. 1-10, not shown). The atmosphere can be generated by passing a gas, e.g. moisture-free air, N2 or A over or through liquid SnCl4. The concentration of the latter can be altered by varying the temperature of the liquid or by altering the flow rate of the carrier gas or by introducing further carrier gas or by mixing an inert liquid with the SnCl2. Only a portion of the glass article, e.g. the neck of a container, need be coated (see Figs. 6-10). The SnO2-coated glass can also be coated with stearates and polyvinyl alcohol reaction products. The SnO2 coating can be applied by mixing SnCl2 vapour with gas and air and burning in a gas flame burner (see Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown).
