Abstract

1,197,322. Cellulose solutions. TOMOEGAWA PAPER MFG. CO. Ltd. 11 Sept., 1967 [14 Sept., 1966], No. 41323/67. Headings C3A, C3F and C3P. A cellulose solution comprises at least one part by wt. of cellulose, at least 2À5 moles each of SO 2 and an amine per anhydroglucose unit of the cellulose and at least 4 parts by wt. of an organic solvent which contains at least one organic aprotic solvent sufficiently polar to be able to ionize a complex of an amine and SO 2 the mol. ratio of amine: SO 2 not exceeding 4 : 1. Aprotic solvents disclosed are DMSO, DMF and acetonitrile which may be used together with formamide, pyridine, acetone, dichloromethane, benzene or dioxane. Specified amines include isobutyl, dimethyl, diethyl, trimethyl, triethyl, secbutyl and t-butyl amines, piperidine and pyrrolidine. The solution may additionally contain, e.g. nitrocellulose, polyacrylonitrile, polvinylacetate, a polycarbonate, PVC and/or polyvinylidene chloride or polymethylmethacrylate. The cellulose and any other polymer in the solution may be recovered by evaporation, under reduced pressure, of the amine, solvent and SO 2 below 50‹ C., or by precipitation with acetone, methanol, benzene or water.
