Abstract

1,196,964. Wells &c. DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc. 27 June, 1967 [27 June, 1966], No. 27994/67. Heading E1F. A well packer comprises packing 347 carried by a sleeve 349, slips 25, 62, a mandrel 303 extending through the sleeve and slips, and a connection 74, 313 permitting movement of the mandrel relative to the packing and slips when the packer is set so that a bypass between the sleeve and mandrel may be closed by a seal 355 when the packer is set. The packer is led into the casing with components positioned as shown, the pin 74 located at 74a in the slot 313 in the mandrel 303 entraining the friction pads 73, the slips 62 a slip expander 56, the sleeve 349 carrying the packing 347 and the expander segments 33, and the slips 25 and a setting sleeve 316 being slidably mounted on the mandrel between a shoulder 306 and a connection 301. The packer is set by slightly raising the mandrel and then twisting and lowering it until the pin is located at 74d in the slot. During the setting, the connection 301 engages the setting sleeve, the setting sleeve opens out the expander segments 33 and a pin 333 is sheared so that a pin 330 moving with the slips 25 is urged by a spring 328 to engage the bottom of a slot 322 in the setting sleeve to expand the slips 25 and the seal 355 on the mandrel engaging the bore 351 of the sleeve 349 to close the by pass passage connecting the ports 57, 342. After the mandrel has been twisted so that the pin 74 takes up the position 74e, the mandrel may be raised or lowered to further expand the packing. On suitable rotation and raising of the mandrel so that the pin 74 takes up the position 74h or 74i, the seal is withdrawn from the bore so that the by pass is opened whilst the packer remains set.
