Abstract

1,196,419. Stretching fibres. I.W.S. NOMINEE CO. Ltd. 20 Dec., 1967 [21 Dec., 1966], No. 57269/66. Headings D1F and D1D. Staple textile fibres, e.g. wool fibres are stretched and set by inserting twist into a sliver of the fibres, passing the twisted sliver through the nips of two pairs of rollers spaced apart by a distance greater than the staple length of the fibres being treated, the second pair of rollers being driven at a greater speed than the first pair, and setting the fibres in the extended condition. The twist imparted corresponds to a twist multiplier within the range of 600-1000. The sliver 8 passes through a twisting device 9 and into a stretching and setting apparatus through guide eye 14 adjacent one end of roller 1. Each pair of rollers has an idler roller 6, 7 and the sliver passes in a helical path around both sets of rollers 1, 6 and 2, 7 to enter and leave the apparatus at the same end (see Fig. 3). The helical path is determined by guide pins 11. Chamber 21 constitutes a steaming zone containing steam jets 13 and chamber 23 constitutes a drying zone. The sliver is untwisted after stretching in a device 10.
