1,196,344. Tunnelling shields. GOSUDARSTVENNY ORDENA TRUDOVOGO KRASNOGO ZNAMENI PROBKTNOIZYSKATELSKY INSTITUT . "METROGIPROTRANS". 23 Jan., 1968 [23 Jan., 1967], No. 3557/68. Heading E1F. A shield for constructing tunnels comprises a support frame 2, jacks 6 carried by the frame, a pressure ring 5 adapted to be moved by the jacks to press material into position to form a lining in the tunnel, and forcetransmitting devices 8 located between the jacks and the ring and adapted to allow transverse displacement of the jacks relative to the ring. The frame 2 has platforms 3 carrying devices 4 for mechanised working of the tunnel face. Each device 8 includes a casing 12 housing a bar 9 which has part-spherical faces 10, 11 engaging respective members 13, 14 on the ring 5 and the rod 7 of the associatedjack. A spring-loaded ferrule 15 biases the bar 9 to its central position in the casing.
