Abstract

1,195,573. Magnetic structures. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 24 July, 1967 [28 July, 1966], No. 33909/67. Heading H1H. The surface of a magnetic recording material comprising a layer of a thermoplastic binder containing magnetic particles on a support is smoothed by heating the material above the softening point of the binder, passing it between the nip of at least one pair of adjustable calendering rollers, then passing it past a thicknesssensing unit, and continuously adjusting the pressure excited by the rollers in response to signals from the sensing unit so that the thickness of the layer is maintained constant. The material may be preheated by electric heaters, and/or hot rollers may be used. The temperature may be above 90‹ C. for a polyvinylbutyral binder, e.g. 110 or 135‹ C. The pressure may be 30 or 90 1b./inch, and may be adjusted by varying the distance between the rollers using an hydraulic piston. Several sets of rollers may be used, each at a different temperature.
