A cyclone, Fig. 1, for removing fine solids from a liquid suspension and discharging them as compact bodies or slugs 27 comprises a minor cylindrical section 11 and a major conical section 12, a vortex finder 13 defining with the wall of the cylindrical section 11 an annular chamber 21 into which a feed pipe 23 opens tangentially, and a tubular member 18 mounted on the conical section 12 and having an outwardly diverging bore 19 in communication with an orifice 15 at the apex of the conical section. The cyclone may be of metal or plastics and the member 18 may be of metal or ceramic material. The vortex finder opens into an overflow chamber provided with a clear liquid discharge pipe 24. A valve 25 serves to regulate the vacuum in the cyclone so as to maintain a balance between the slugs 27 discharging from, and air entering through the bore 19 of the member 18. Figs. 5 and 6 show two arrangements of a pair of cyclones operating in series. Fig. 7 shows a cluster arrangement of cyclones 38 suspended from a common support plate 39 and fed from a central pipe 40 through side branches. The vortex finders 42 extend into a common overflow chamber 43 defined between the plate 39 and a housing member 44, and communicating with a chamber 49 through openings 50 in housing member 44. A valve 51 controls the pressure in the cyclones and the chambers 43, 49.
