Abstract

1,194,039. Universal joints. SULZER BROS. Ltd. 2 Oct., 1967 [30 Sept., 1966], No. 44842/67. Heading F2U. [Also in Division D1] A shock-absorbing coupling between a main drive shaft 21 and a shaft 16 driving a loom motion comprises prestressed resilient inserts 34, 35 between polygonal ends of these shafts and a coupling sleeve. The coupling sleeve is split axially into two parts which are connected together by bolts which are tightened to give a desired prestressing to the resilient inserts. The inserts are located axially of the sleeve between end plates 31 and shoulders 29, and are located axially of the shafts by end plates 19, 24 and shoulders 18, 23. The inserts may be of natural or synthetic rubber or of a polytetrafluoroethylene, and may contain reinforcing means. In a modification one insert is replaced by a non- resilient metal blank to give a stiffer coupling.
