Abstract

1,192,993. Propellants; copper manganite. CHAS. PFIZER & CO. Inc. 27 Sept., 1967, No. 44080/67. Headings C1A and C1D. The ignitability of a solid propellant composition is promoted by the incorporation of 0À25% to 5% by weight of copper manganite of the formula n CuO.Mn 2 O 3 wherein n is 1, 2 or 3. The propellant composition may comprise (a) ammonium perchlorate, aluminium powder, polybutadiene - acrylic acid - acrylonitrile terpolymer and an epoxy curing agent or (b) ammonium nitrate, 1,3 - butadiene - 2 - methyl - 5-vinylpyrrolidone copolymer and a curing agent. Copper manganite CuO.Mn 2 O 3 is made by adding NaOH to a solution containing copper sulphate and manganese sulphate and calcining the precipitate. The compounds 2CuO.Mn 2 O 3 and 3CuO.Mn 2 O 3 are made by adding manganous chloride to a mixture of ammoniacal cupric oxide and NaOH.
