Abstract

1,192,396. Fastener driving tools. SPOTNAILS Inc. 14 July, 1967, No. 32525/67. Heading B4C. A fluid-pressure (e.g. compressed air) actuated tool for driving fasteners, such as staples or nails, comprises a driver 25 connected to a piston 23 which is reciprocable in a cylinder 18 under the control of a valve means 40. The control valve means includes a valve member 50 having a stem 51, 52 adapted to engage a lever 69 pivoted on a trigger 58, the lever being operatively connected via an arm 79, 80, to a work contact finger 72. In operation, with the device in the position shown, air passes from a reservoir 15, or through passages 47, 48, 49, 39, 38, to maintain a valve 21 closed. Upon raising the trigger 58 until a shoulder 67 thereon abuts a stop pin 68 and without the nose of the tool in contact with the working surface, the valve 50 is raised to a position (Fig. 4, not shown) wherein air can still act on the valve 21. When the nose of the tool is pressed against the working surface, the finger 72 is raised so that, via the arm 79, 80, the lever 69 is lifted to cause the valve 50 to close off communication between the reservoir 15 and passages 38, 39. The valve 21 then opens rapidly and allows air to enter the cylinder to cause the piston 23 to effect a working stroke.
