Abstract

1,191,991. Strap-tensioning apparatus. SIGNODE CORP. 29 Jan., 1968 [31 Jan., 1967], No. 4533/68. Heading B8C. Apparatus for feeding a strap around a package, and for tensioning the strap, comprises two wheels around which the strap is guided. The first wheel is driven in one direction at high speed to feed the strap, and is then reversed to take up the slack. The second wheel is driven at a lower speed than the first in order to apply final tension to the strap. Strap 4 is drawn from a roll (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), by a feeding and tensioning mechanism 6 driven by a shaft 14 which is connected to a motor (12) through a clutch 16. A pinion 17, mounted on the shaft 14, drives a tension gear 18, which is geared on its opposite side to a further pinion 20, which drives a feed wheel 26 by way of a slip clutch 24 and a shaft 22. The strap is directed around the feed wheel 26 by pinch rolls 27, 29, and then enters a guide 30 which surrounds a tension wheel 32. The rigidity of the strap keeps it within the guide 30 and away from the periphery of the wheel 32 during feeding towards a package (10). When sufficient strap has been fed, the drive is reversed and the feed wheel pulls the strap back, taking up any slack. In so doing, the strap is brought into contact with the wheel 32 which is thus caused to rotate on its shaft 34, which is freely mounted at the centre of the tension gear 18 through an overrunning clutch 36 fixed on the gear 18. The tension wheel can thus rotate at the high speed of the feed wheel by virtue of the clutch 36. When the slack has been taken up, the torque on the shaft 22 acuses the clutch 24 to slip, and the speed of rotation of the wheels 26, 32 decreases until the clutch 36 locks, when the tension wheel 32 will be driven at this lower speed to apply further tension to the strap. At the required final tension, the clutch 16 is arranged to slip, and a ratchet 44 is engaged to retain the tension while the strap is secured by a mechanism (8) which may apply a seal or fuse together the overlapped portions of the strap.
