Abstract
1,191,476. Uses of luminescence. FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 23 Oct., 1968 [27 Oct., 1967], No. 48993/67. Heading C4S. [Also in Division G1] A process for controlling the uniformity and thickness of a transparent coating applied to a continuous metal web or a succession of metal articles comprises feeding the web or articles in succession past a coating station, applying a transparent coating which includes in its composition an ingredient causing the composition to fluoresce in ultra-violet radiation, passing the coated web or articles through a zone illuminated with ultra-violet radiation and controlling the coating conditions to compensate for variations in uniformity or thickness of the coating, the variations in uniformity or thickness of the coating causing variations in the intensity of the fluorescent response of the coating in the zone. The ingredient which causes the fluorescence is a dye such as Xanthen dyes, Phthalein and orthophthalic acid derivatives, naphthalene and derivatives, Rhodamines, Quinine, Anthracene, Acridines, Pyrenes, Azines and Thionenes, preferably Rhodamine 6G, fluorescein, eosin or Rhodamine B and the coating composition may be lubricant oil, a dispersion or solution of an anticorrosion agent, e.g. methyl benztriazole or a chromium complex or a transparent varnish. Coating to prevent corrosion of Zn is mentioned.
