Abstract
1,190,451. Ion sources. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 June, 1967 [2 July, 1966], No. 30219/67. Heading H1D. An ion source for a mass spectrometer wherein gas is ionized by an electron beam 1 moving in the direction of a magnetic field B, the resulting ions being extracted through a gap 3 into an ion lens 10-15, is characterized by the provision of a flat grid electrode 7 consisting of parallel wires at right angles to the electron beam and to the extracted ion beam. The grid is preferably mounted at the open end of a frusto conical electrode 8, and separates a region of low electric field (a few volts/cm.) adjacent the electron beam from a region of high electric field (tens of volts/cm.) in the ion lens. A repeller electrode 6 is preferably provided on the opposite side of the electron beam from the grid and may be at a small positive potential relative to the grid; one of the two electrodes may be connected to the housing 4, the other being insulated from the housing, or both electrodes may be connected to the housing. Mass discrimination in source itself is avoided by this arrangement.
