Abstract
1,152,014. Ion sources. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. 3 March, 1967 [23 March, 1966], No. 10268/67. Heading H1D. An ion source, e.g. for a mass spectrometer of the cycloidal path crossed-field type, has alternative arrangements for producing an electron beam for ionizing the gas so that if one arrangement fails the other arrangement may be energized to sustain operation of the ion source. In the source shown of the type descibed in Specification 1,130,468 having an inner electrode 23 insulated by mica sheets 25 from two outer electrodes 22, 24, identical electron emitter assemblies 34, 36 are positioned at opposite ends of the electron beam path 37. Each emitter assembly includes an insulator block 38, a clamping screw 41, a filamentary emitter 44 and a beam collector 46 for the other emitter assembly. When one emitter assembly is used as a beam collector for the other the filamentary emitter is short-circuited. A suitable switching circuit is described and specific dimensions for the ion source are given. The source may be used for the production of positive or negative ions.
