Abstract

1,190,441. Respiratory apparatus. CAPE ENG. CO Ltd. 12 Feb., 1968 [10 Feb., 1967], No. 6464/67. Heading A5T. A machine for the administration of anaesthetic gases or for the ventilation of a patient includes pumping means 7 for effecting expiration of gas from the patient, ducting 6, 9 for conveying expired gas from the patient to the said means, a branch: pipe 16 leading from the ducting and a selector valve 19 operable to permit gas expired by the patient to flow either through the branch pipe or through the portion of the ducting downstream of the junction therewith of the branch pipe, there being means for connecting the branch pipe to a spirometer, or equivalent apparatus, for measuring the volume of expired gas or rate of expiration, cr to a sampling device, whereby sample of gas expired by a patient can be tested or analysed. As shown, the branch pipe 16 is connected in the dluct 6, 9 between valves 17 and 18 cf an otherwise known open-circuit anaesthetic machine or ventilator which comprises an air or anaesthetic gas inlet duct 1, a positive phase bellows 3, and a control valve 4 providing the air or gas through a pipe 9 to the patients face mask. An outlet duct 5 to atmosphere, a negative phase bellows 7 with a valve controlled by-pass 15, and a control valve 8 serve to remove the exhalation gas from the patient. The machine includes an oxygen inlet 10 and the bellows and control valves are operated by a shaft 12 from an electric motor 13 and gear 14. A spirometer 20, or other apparatus, is connected to the end of the branch pipe 16 and, by manually operating the selector valve 19, the volume of gas expired by the patient, or the rate of expiration may be measured or a gas sample may be obtained for analysis. The inlet duct 1 and the outlet duct 5 may be connected together so that the machine operates on closed circuit.
