Abstract
1392069 Respiratory apparatus SYNTHELABO 10 Nov 1972 [10 Nov 1971 11 Oct 1972] 52055/72 Heading A5T Respiratory apparatus comprises an air turbine pump 2 driven by an electric motor 1 and connected to a mouthpiece 19 by a pipe 5, 18 in which is located an adjustable throttling valve 8 and a flow control valve 6, means for periodically opening and closing the valve 6 being provided. The valve 6 in an electromagnetic valve and is controlled by a multivibrator 25 and switch 26 described in Specification 1392070 which allow operation of the apparatus either at a frequency determined by the respiratory rhythm of the patient or at a predetermined frequency. Oxygen may be supplied from cylinders 10 through pipe 9 containing a throttling valve 14 and electomagnetic valve 14. The air or air-oxygen mixture passes through a humidifier 15 and a heat exchanger formed by telescopic portions 18a, 18b of pipe 18, which may be of metal. The mouthpiece includes a conduit 45 which is flattened and contoured to provide a rigid mouthpiece 19 and has apertures 46 in its side wall closed by flap valves 48. A valve 47 is located within conduit 45. When the patient inhales valve 47 opens and when the patient exhales valve 47 closes but flap valves 48 open to allow exhaled air to pass to atmosphere. A pressure detector 20 is provided, A safety valve 50 is connected to pipe 5 and comprises a member of elastomeric magnetised material movable within a housing having an outlet to atmosphere and a base portion of ferromagnetic material, the member closing the outlet when air is supplied by pump 2 but being held against the base portion of the air supply ceases whereby pipe 5 is open to atmospheric air through the outlet.
