Abstract

A metal tube is tapered by forcing a tube and tapered mandrel through a deformable drawing die or forcing the die over the tube and mandrel so as to cause the die to deform and the tube to be drawn on to the mandrel. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, one of two plate members 24, 26 is moved relative to the stationary other to draw the tubing 20 through a brass die 34 containing 80-90% Cu against-a tapered mandrel 10 without any reduction in the wall thickness. The die 34 and mandrel 10 may be rotated relative to each other. The die 34 is held between a pair of semi-circular segments 36, 38 resiliently biased together by a spring loop 40, and may be notched at its trailing end (Fig. 7, not shown) to reduce the amount of die material when a tube having a large amount of taper is to be produced. A tube also having a tapering wall thickness may be formed by first drawing a tube over a slightly tapered mandrel through a conventional die of fixed internal dimensions to apply a taper to the wall thickness, after which the tube is tapered without any further change in the wall thickness using the apparatus of Fig. 3. At least a portion of the mandrel 10 may be non- circular, e.g. square, hexagonal or the mandrel 10 may have stepped, tapered portions. Two tubes may be laminated together. In a further embodiment, Fig. 11, a tube tapered inwardly and then outwardly is formed by positioning a die 80 between a back-up plate 72 and a split die 84. The latter is moved towards the former to cause the front end of the die 80 to be cammed inwardly so that the tube 20 is drawn over the mandrel portion 68. When the tube 20 has been drawn completely over the mandrel portion 68, the die halves 86, 88 of the split die 84 are separated and the drawing of the tube 20 over the mandrel portion 70 is carried out using the die 80 only. The mandrel section 68 may be omitted and the sequence of the two tapering operations repeated along a length of tubing. The tubing may be of copper, brass, aluminium, nickel or stainless steel.
