Abstract
1,189,177. Recovery of tin. CONSOLIDATED TIN SMELTERS Ltd. 5 Dec., 1968 [12 Dec., 1967], No. 56366/67. Heading C1A. Tin is recovered as volatile stannous oxide, stannous sulphide, or a tin/stannic oxide mixture, from slag by heating the slag at a temperature from 1100‹ to 1600‹ C. at a pressure not greater than 20 mms. Hg. The slag is heated in a refractory lined pot in an evacuating chamber which is gradually evacuated so that the products volatilize. Two more methods are specified. One involves streaming the hot slag into the chamber so that it falls in droplets. The second involves discharging the slag from the chamber by means of a barometric leg operated continuously or intermittently, the flow of slag being controlled by a stopper rod and nozzle assembly. Their rate of removal is encouraged by incorporating in the slag, an alkaline earth metal oxide, calcium oxide being specified. The volatilized products condense on the walls of the chamber, the pipes leading from the chamber to the evacuating pumps, and in the pump system itself, and are recovered therefrom.
