Abstract
1,188,747. Magnetic locks. W. W. BARNEY. 24 Sept., 1968, No. 45218/68. Heading E2A. A lock operated by a coded magnetic key 32 has magnetic tumblers 48 which are selectively lifted by the pattern of field on the key to allow movement of blocking pins 30 and so allow a locking plate 23 to be drawn obliquely down by an eccentric pin on the operating spindle 11 to allow this to rotate and withdraw the bolt 34 by means of rack and pinion 17. The key consists of a cord 32 having magnets 38 concealed in it, and it serves to attract magnets 48 lying in transverse bores 47 in plugs 29. Before the key is inserted, magnets 48 drop to block pins 30, but insertion of the key lifts these magnets to unblock pins 30 to allow inward movement of plate 23. The polarity of the magnets must be correctly coded by rotation of plugs 29 through 180‹ and then locking by pins 43, the inactive pins 30' lying in grooves 23' in plate 23 so that they are inactive. The operating spindle 11 is driven from the knob 12 through a clutch 14, 15, 16 to prevent forcing. The lock may secure a door or other devices.
