Abstract
1,188,215. Formaldehyde production; methanol. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 20 July, 1967 [22 July, 1966], No. 33309/67. Addition to 1,135,476. Heading C2C. A process for the production of formaldehyde comprises removing a fraction of lower boiling point than methanol from a liquid crude methanol, vaporizing the remainder and subjecting the resulting vapour to oxidative dehydrogenation with oxygen or a gas containing free oxygen in contact with a metallic silver catalyst at elevated temperature to form formaldehyde, alkali being added to the crude methanol before and/or during and/or after removal of the said fraction having a lower boiling point than methanol and before vaporization of the remainder, wherein the liquid crude methanol is additionally treated with an oxidizing agent prior to the removal of the fraction of lower boiling point than methanol from the liquid crude methanol.
