Abstract
1,188,175. Ingot moulds. JOHN FOWLER (DON FOUNDRY) Ltd. 25 Sept., 1968 [9 Nov., 1967], No. 50927/67. Heading B3F. An ingot mould with a horizontally extending mould cavity 9 has at least one upper section 1 and at least one lower section 2. The sections 1, 2 are held together by lugs (5, 6) and clamps (7, 8). At one end of the cavity 9 both sections 1, 2 are bolted by flanges 3, 4 to a flange (17) of a runner assembly (13) that defines, within a liner 20, a vertical pouring runner 18. The runner has a refractory bottom block 22 upon which melt impinges when casting. The length of the mould cavity 9 may be increased by bolting additional upper and lower sections to the first two sections. To close the end of the cavity remote from the pouring runner a removable end plate 12 is provided. Should a easing of a length unequal to a multiple of the length of the mould sections 1, 2 be required, a plug 29 may be inserted into the mould cavity and may be backed up with packing. In the upper section adjacent the pouring runner a blow-hole 23 is provided with a permeable oil/sand core 24 which allows gases to escape when pouring the melt. During pouring, the core 24 is held down by a weight 26. Whilst casting the metal the mould cavity axis is inclined slightly to the horizontal (4 degrees) to ensure that the melt reaches the end of the cavity.
