Abstract

1,187,098. Securing hubs on shafts. R. R. DOWNIE. 8 Sept., 1967, No. 41244/67. Heading F2U. A hub D is secured to a shaft C by a key comprising coacting wedge members A, B, the co-operating surfaces of which have serrations 31, 32 preventing relative transverse movement. The members A, B are adjusted longitudinally to tightly engage the walls of the keyways in the hub and the shaft, the bases 26, 27 of the keyways having a clearance from the adjoining faces of the key. In order to accommodate mis-matching of the keyways or to permit slight rotary adjustment of the hub of the shaft, shims may be interposed between one or more of the key faces and the corresponding keyway walls. To permit the remaining sidewalls of the key to bear properly against the keyway walls when shims are employed, metal must be removed from the keys to correct the face angles, and in order to reduce the amount of metal to be removed shallow relief areas 2, 4 are formed in the upper faces of the key. Relief shoulders 20, 21 are formed on the shaft. In a modification the key and keyway are of generally rectangular cross-section instead of hexagonal as shown, and the key may be further modified by tapering the height of the members A, B, so that they firmly engage the basal walls of the keyway as well as the side walls. Transverse pins may be provided towards the ends of the key members to facilitate their adjustment for wedging or removal.
