118,606. Norton Co., (Assignees of White, R. H.). Aug. 18, 1917, [Convention date]. Alumina.-In the fusion of alumina in an electric furnace having a carbon hearth, the partial reduction of the lower layer of the charge is prevented by mixing with the lower layer a small proportion, such as 5 per cent., of a reducible material containing oxygen, such as iron oxide, or, preferably, a material the product of reduction of which will be volatilized during the treatment, for instance zinc oxide or soda-ash. When a volatile substance is added, the quantity may be considerably in excess of the amount necessary to prevent reduction, so as to protect the alumina completely.
