157,944. Corsalli, W. June 27, 1917, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Alloys; briquetting processes. - Scrap iron or steel is smelted with the addition of briquettes consisting of coke powder, anthracite, iron oxides, iron filings, oxides of silicon or silicates, manganese ore, &c. mixed with a binding means such as lime, cream, tar, molasses, &c., the process being carried out in shaft, hearth, or electric furnaces. The briquettes may be pressed by hand or by machinery and their composition adjusted according to the special purpose for which they are intended. Broken castings &c. may be used instead of the usual scrap iron &c. In one form of the process, scrap iron is mixed with molten pig iron in the furnace and then the briquettes in the desired quantity for carburizing added. Iron ore mixed with manganese ore is then added to the iron bath if necessary. The reduction is effected by the carbon in the bath and after the reaction is complete the excess of slag is tapped off, the bath again carburized with briquettes, and more iron ore added. This is continued until the iron bath has reached the desired size and the process can then be finished in any known manner.
