Abstract

1,185,371. Rotary hydraulic motors and pumps. A.A. SCHMITZ. March 29, 1967, No.14372/67. Heading F1F. A rotary hydraulic motor (or pump) comprises a first member having an exterior surface, a second member having an exterior surface encircling the exterior surface and means mounting said members for relative rotation therebetween wherein one of said members includes a plurality of segments defining a plurality of axially extending channels slidably receiving vanes and each channel has at least one spacer brace and each vane a notch or notches to receive the brace or spacer braces. As shown, a first inner member, a stator 40, Figs.1 and 2, having a contoured surface 42 is fixed to a tubular member 56 secured, e. g. to a vehicle and encircled by a second outer member, a rotor 21, consisting of an end plate 12 having a plurality of axially-extending segments 18 defining therebetween parallel-sided channels 28 slidably mounting vanes 30 urged by springs 39 into engagement with the contoured surface 42 and an end plate 14. The plates 12, 14 are peripherally machined to receive a ring 26 formed with lugs L for attachment to the vehicle tyre rim. Within the tubular member 56 is slidably mounted a tubular valve spool 66 which on movement of an operating lever 80 controls the supply and exhaust of hydraulic operating fluid to and from the motor. Fluid is admitted through an inlet 84 and passes through radial ports 86, annular passage 70 and radial ports 91 to one or both sets of axiallyspaced radial inlet ports 92, 93 to act on the vanes 30 and is exhausted through a set of radial ports 90 and an annular passage 75 between the valve spool 66 and the tubular member 56 and an exhaust port 95. To double the speed of the motor and halve its torque the lever 80 is moved anti-clockwise to isolate the set of ports 93 from the inlet port 84 and connect them to the exhaust port 95 so that only half the displacement chamber between the rotor 21 and stator 40 are used. Instead of the stator having four lobes as shown, it could have eight or more lobes and the sets of axiallyspaced inlet ports could be increased to three or more to permit of three or more operating speeds and corresponding torques. To prevent deflection of the segments 18, spacers 35, Fig.4, are fitted therebetween and the vanes are notched at 34 to receive the spacers. Leakage fluid collecting at the inner end of member 56 passes through operating shaft 65 and radial ports 103 to a drain port 104.
