Abstract
1,183,030. Ethylene copolymer dispersions. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 18 Nov., 1968 [17 Nov., 1967], No. 54687/68. Addition to 1,171,424. Heading C3P. Aqueous dispersions of ethylene copolymers, having 30-70% solids content, consist of 40- 85% of a copolymer of ethylene and a monomer having polar characteristics, 15-60% of a hydrocarbon wax, and up to 10% of an emulsifying agent having a Hydrophil-Lyphophil- Balance number of at least 18. The dispersion may be prepared by dissolving the copolymer and wax in a water-immiscible organic solvent (or solvent mixture), emulsifying in water with an appropriate emulsifying agent and evaporating off the solvent. In the examples ethylenevinyl acetate copolymers, or ethylene-vinyl acetate-methacrylic acid terpolymers, dissolved with a wax in a solvent system consisting of a mixture of propanol and either cyclohexane or benzene, are emulsified to form an aqueous dispersion, by mixing with one of the following emulsifying agents, sodium or ammonium salts of dimerized wood rosin, sodium lauryl sulphate, polyvinyl alcohol or sodium oleate. Suitable waxes are paraffin wax, a synthetic wax such as pentaerythritol tetrastearate, a micro wax or a natural wax such as carnauba wax.
