[Also in Divisions B3 and B8] Abrasion- and shock-resistant elements of a machine, such as crushing-bowl liners 2 (40) or head mantles (20, 30) of a gyratory crusher, lifter bars or wear plates in a rotary mill, conveyor flights, shoots (or lining plates therefor) for particulate material, or screening bars or grates, are made by casting hard metal about a unitary skeleton 3, 4, 5 of metal of higher tensile strength which has a cured coating 5a of a mixture of sand and thermosetting resin so that there is a greater thickness of the cast metal between the skeleton 3, 4, 5 and the working face than between the skeleton and the backing face. The cured coating 5a separates the metal parts so that limited relative movements can occur. Perlitic, carbidic white cast iron or martensitic, carbidic Cr-Ni alloyed cast iron is cast about high tensile steel rings 3, 4, 5 which may be held in spaced relationship by ties or by radial stays from a central support. Spacers (25, 36, 45) may be used to support and centre the rings in the mould and extend to the backing face of the cast element.
