Abstract

1,181,353. Vehicle steering mechanism. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 19 Dec., 1968 [1 Feb., 1968], No. 5229/68. Heading B7H. In motor vehicle steering mechanism including a rack and pinion steering gear, a bracket 20 is fixed to each end of the rack 10, and each tie rod 26 is connected at its inboard end to the respective bracket by a pivot joint having its pivot centre 40 disposed at a higher level than the centre line 12 of the rack. The pivot joint may be a ball joint or, as shown, comprises a rubber bush 38 bonded between an eye 36 on the tie rod and a bolt 30 extending through aligned apertures in spaced legs 32, 34 on the bracket 20. The bracket 20 has a splined aperture fitted on the rack 10 and secured by a clamping bolt 22.
