Abstract

[Also in Division El] A fibre-resin skylight dome, having an outer covering layer of an ultra-violet light weatherresistant material, such as polyvinylfluoride (PVF), is made by drawing a loosely clamped film of PVF into a vacuum mould, applying a layer of fibre-reinforced polyester resin to the film whilst retained by the mould, curing the fibre resin layer, and finally removing the composite article thus formed from the mould. The fibre is loosely clamped against a vacuum mould 13 by a frame 21 and, during the application of vacuum to draw the film into the mould, wrinkles or laps 26 which would normally appear are prevented by locally heating the appropriate regions of the sheet. The heat may be applied by a hot air blower 28 or a radiant heater 30. The heat causes the film to shrink in these regions thus taking up the wrinkles as they are formed.
