Abstract

A skeleton or preformed layer of a foamed plastics impregnated or treated to have deposits of a thermoplastic resin is deformed by moulding or laminating, by application of heat and pressure. The thermoplastic deposits are of a composition, e.g. a P.V.C. or P.V. acetate plastisol, having a softening point below the softening point of the foamed preformed layer, e.g. polyurethane. The moulded article could be an arch support, an insole, or a sheet of bunion pads or toe caps. In a two-layered polyurethane laminate the thermoplastic deposits are contained at least at the abutting surfaces and the layers may be of different colours and the outer surfaces of the laminate may be covered with stretch nylon or cotton fabric. However, only one of the polyurethane layers need have the thermoplastic deposits. A sandwich laminate comprising outer polyurethane layers having thermoplastic deposits and a central layer of foamed material may be formed, the outer surfaces of the laminate may be covered with stretched cotton fabric. The heating may be by dielectric or induction heating means and in several examples an aluminium mould is used.
