Abstract

1,179,152. Garage lifts; safety catch-gear. ETABS. J. VILLARS S.A. 3 Feb., 1967 [5 May, 1966], No. 5365/67. Headings B8H and B8L. In a garage lift comprising four guide columns for the corners of the lifting platform which is supported at one corner by a screw-and-nut mechanism and at the other corners by cables, a safety device is provided at each comer to immobilize the platform if the cables stretch or break and thereby fail to maintain the platform substantially horizontal. Each safety device comprises a plate 27, pivoted at 28 to the platform and formed with an aperture 30 through which extends a rod 25 suspended from the top of the guide column 7. A stop 29 on the platform normally maintains the plate horizontal. If the associated cable stretches or breaks, the corner of the platform descends, thereby causing a stop 32 to press the rod 25 against the edge of the aperture 30 causing the plate to pivot and the edges of the aperture to grip the rod, Fig. 3 (not shown). The cables are associated with a cut-out switch for the electric drive motor for the screw-and-nut mechanism whereby when a cable becomes slack it actuates the switch to stop the motor, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown).
