Abstract

1,176,429. Coated hollow articles. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 15 Aug., 1968 [24 Oct., 1967], No. 39106/68. Heading B2K. [Also in Division D1] The flash boiler of a steam iron is coated with an admixture of sodium silicate and hydrated alumina. Hydrated alumina is added to sodium silicate solution before it is sprayed or otherwise applied to the steam chamber of the steam iron. The sodium silicate is identified by the weight ratio of Na 2 O to SiO 2 and may be at least 1:3.5 and preferably 1:3.75. Aluminium hydroxide or alumina trihydrate is Al 2 O 3 3H 2 O approximately and should be present in the spray coating solution from about 10-25% by weight or in larger amounts for brushing or spreading by spatula. The coating may be heated to 375‹F or preferably 400‹F. The aluminium sole plate 10 has a cavity 11 whose surfaces are prepared by degreasing, washing or etching and heating to 400‹F when the solution is sprayed on and cured by the residual heat. A specific aqueous solution comprises 92.6% sodium silicate solution and 7.4% hydrated alumina of average particle diameter 35 microns. The sodium silicate solution comprises 32.1% solids of which 6.8% is NaO and 25À3% is SiO 2 i.e. a ratio of 1:3.75. Other possible additives are silica, aerogel, colloidal silica, colloidal clays e.g. bentonite, surfactants e.g. those based on alkaryl polyether alcohols, sulphonates and sulphates.
