Abstract
1387719 Refractory coatings SOC GENERALE DES PRODUITS REFRACTAIRES 13 April 1972 [13 April 1971] 17116/72 Heading C1J A refractory coating is formed by projecting on to a surface a mineral composition which hardens on the surface, the composition comprising a solid phase 5 to 96% by wt. of which is constituted by mineral fibres and at least 4% by wt. of magnesium oxide having a particle size of less than 150Á, and a liquid phase the weight of which is 80 to 220% that of the solid phase and which is an aqueous solution of ortho phosphoric acid or acid phosphate of magnesium, the weight of P 2 O 5 lying between 6 and 25% by wt. of the solid phase, and the weight ratio P 2 O 5 : total MgO being not more than 3 : 1, e.g. 0À8 to 1À6 : 1. The mineral fibres may be glass or rock wool, asbestos, or mixtures thereof. The solid phase may also contain a light weight mineral aggregate, e.g. expanded perlite, vermiculite, expanded clays, crude or calcined diatomites, and broken insulating refractory bricks not exceeding 90% of the weight of the solid phase. The magnesium oxide may be in the form of hydrate of magnesium. Coating may be by using a pneumatic machine having a nozzle for projection of the solid phase and a moistening device fitted to the nozzle for simultaneous dispensing of the liquid phase. After the composition has been projected on to the surface and has formed a gel containing hydrated magnesium phosphate, the gel is heated to eliminate the water of crystallization of the hydrated magnesium phosphate.
