1,173,864. Sampling molten materials. INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE FRANCAISE. 9 April, 1968 [10 April, 1967], No. 16902/68. Heading B8N. [Also in Division C7] A device for withdrawing samples from a bath of molten material, e.g. molten metal or glass, comprises a tube 4 adapted to have one end dipped into the bath and withdrawn after a time interval which is sufficient to ensure that the material which has penetrated into the interior of the tube has solidified, and a cutter 14a for cutting the tube at a point which contains the solidified material and a second cutter 14b for cutting at a point on the tube which has not been reached by the material. The tube is guided in rollers 5 and connected by a releasable clamp 7 to a belt 8 driven via a motor 11; the outer surface of the tube is covered by a coating of refractory material. The upper end of the tube is connected via a pipe 17 and a valve 20 to a nitrogen cylinder 23 and a vacuum pump 26. In operation, a stop member 15 is moved in order to allow the end of the tube to be inserted in to the molten material, e.g. steel pressurized nitrogen being fed down the tube in order to prevent slag 3 on the. surface of the steel from entering the tube. The valve 20 is then actuated so as to apply the vacuum source 26 to the tube and thereby assist the entry of the metal into the tube. After a certain time, the tube is raised and the cutters 14a, 14b operated in order to sever the solidified sample from the end of the tube; an additional cutter 14 is provided in order to separate the extreme end portion of the tube which may contain flaws. As the tube is used up additional lengths of tube may be screwed on to the upper end of the old tube.
