Abstract

1,173,174. #-methylmercaptopropionaldehyde. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 18 April, 1967 [18 April, 1966], No. 17823/67 Heading C2C. A process for the production of #-methylmercaptopropionaldehyde comprises (1) reacting methyl mercaptan with acrolein in a molar ratio of 1 : 1À001-1 1À20 and in the presence of a catalyst, (2) removing from the product of step (1) impurities having a lower boiling point than #-methylmercaptopropionaldehyde by rectification under a pressure of less than 200 mm. Hg. with a retention time of less than 60 minutes, while keeping the temperature of the #-methylmercaptopropionaldehyde below 125 degrees and (3) condensing the vapour distilled in step (2) by contacting it with a previously condensed and cooled distillate from step (2).
