Abstract

[Also in Division F1] A multiple tool press, e.g. a crank press, has an overload protective device associated with each tool stage and a further overload protective device which operates when the total of the working pressures on all the stages exceeds a predetermined limit. In Fig. 1 each tool is carried by a cylinder 2 and the space between the cylinder 2 and a piston 1 is supplied with oil under pressure by a pump 3 working in a reservoir 4. Branch pipes 12 connect each "stage" to an adding device comprising an annular series of plungers 16 bearing on a piston 15 in a cylinder. When an overload occurs in any one stage the pressure between the cylinder 2 and piston 1 moves a piston 7 against spring pressure so as to open a return pipe 10 to the reservoir. If the sum of the pressures applied to the piston 15 by the plungers 16 overcomes an opposing gas pressure applied to the other side of the piston 15, the piston and plungers will be forced upwardly to connect pipes 12 through pipes 17 to the reservoir. Switches 24, 25 operated by pistons 7, 15 cause the press to be stopped. Fig. 2 shows a second embodiment employing an electrical overload protection device comprising strain gauges (31) connected to an amplifier (33), a summation amplifier (35) being common to all stages.
