[Also in Division F2] An elongated cylindrical member, e.g. a helically wound tube of paper, or cardboard, e.g. for display and decorative purposes and having a decorative layer wound as the outermost layer of the tube is protected against damage, e.g. during pressing, cutting &c., operations during manufacture or, during transportion by helically winding a protective strip, e.g. of cheap material such as newsprint over the surface of the tube, the turns of the protective strip being adhered to one another to form a protective layer without being adhered to the tube so that the protective layer may be easily removed. The decorative layer, on the tube, may be printed, coloured, or coated paper aluminium foil. The strip can be wound on to the tube during the manufacture thereof the degree of adhesion between the overlapping portions being minimal. As shown, an unglued strip 10 and a number of glued strips 11, 11 are wound upon a mandrel 9 which is advanced by an endless belt 15 driven by a capstan 16, a decorative strip 17 being applied from a reel 18, A protective strip 19 of newsprint passes from a roll 20 between glue applying and backing rollers 21, 22 to apply a narrow line of glue 24 and beneath a perforating wheel 25 to form a line of perforations 26, the strip 19 being wound on to the mandrel 9.
