1,170,619. Hydrogenation of diaminodiphenyl alkanes or ethers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA FABRIK A.G. 8 March, 1967 [9 March, 1966; 20 Aug., 1966; 30 Sept., 1966], No. 10810/67. Heading C2C. Diaminodiphenyl alkanes and ethers are hydrogenated to the corresponding diaminodicyclohexyl compounds by contacting with hydrogen in the presence of hydrogenation catalysts and inert solvents at elevated temperature and superatmospheric pressure in the absence of alkaline earth metal oxides, the inert solvents being cyclic ethers having one oxygen atom in the ring, cyclohexylamine or N-alkylated cyclohexylamines in concentrations of from 30 to 90% by weight based on the total of solvent and compound to be hydrogenated. Preferred diaminodiphenyl alkanes or ethers used as starting materials have the Formula I in which R<SP>1</SP> is an alkylene or alkylidine radical having 1-4 carbon atoms or an oxygen atom, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are hydrogen atoms or C 1 -C 4 alkyl radicals, and R 4 is a hydrogen atom, a C 1 -C 12 alkyl radical, a halogen atom or a C 1 -C 4 alkoxy radical. The preferred hydrogenation catalysts are those containing cobalt or nickel and, in particular, catalysts containing cobalt and manganese. In addition the catalysts may contain other metals e.g. copper, chromium, nickel, tungsten, molbydenum, platinum, palladium or ruthenium. Suitable cyclic ethers for use as solvents are, for example, tetrahydrofuran, tetrahydropyran, hexamethylene oxide, 2 - methyl - tetrahydropyran and 2,4 - dimethyltetrahydrofuran. Suitable cyclohexylamines for use as solvents are cyclohexylamine, N - methyl cyclohexylamine, N,N - diethylcyclohexylamine, N - methyl - N - butylcyclohexylamine and N-isopropyl cyclohexylamine.
