Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A portable engine-driven chain saw comprises a handle yoke 5 extending along a position of the circumference of the engine housing in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the saw chain guide bar 2, and a protective member 6 which is substantially U-shaped with side portions 7 displaceably connected with the yoke and arranged with a spacing to receive the operator's hand whereby, in use, the member is disposed in front of the operator's hand to prevent the hand moving forwardly. The member may be formed in the shape of a hood of leather, plastic or the like. The side portions are spaced apart sufficient to receive the operator's hand and are formed with hole 8 which freely permit the member to move away the yoke. A strap 9 extends between the side members and is grasped at the same time as the yoke to hold the member in position. In another embodiment, the strap 9 is replaced by a loop which is engaged by the index finger of the operator. In the event of a throw-back, the member prevents the operator's hand being removed from the yoke and touching the saw chain.
