Abstract
563,135. Mowing machines. ALLDAY, A. C., and HALL TELEPHONE ACCESSORIES (1928), Ltd. Nov. 15, 1943, No. 18480. [Classes 6 (ii) and 6 (iii)] [Also in Group XIV] Machines for mowing or reaping crops, for cutting hedges, or for clipping the hair of animals, comprise a number of forwardly projecting spaced fingers which form a support for a continuously moving cutting element having forwardly projecting knife elements mounted on a sprocket chain, the latter passing around sprockets carried by a supporting plate, and means being provided to support the forward run of the chain against rearward displacement and a guide plate being arranged to engage the upper surfaces of the knife elements to keep them in engagement with the aligned surfaces of the fingers. In the construction shown the machine carries a power unit 17 serving to drive both the supporting wheels 10 and a shaft 14, the latter extending through a tubular housing 22 and being fitted at its end with a bevel wheel 26. A bracket 23 secured to the housing 22 is fitted with arms 27 carrying a supporting plate 28 and also a bracket 29, this bracket being provided with a bearing for the shaft 30 of a sprocket wheel 31 which. is driven by a wheel 32 driven by bevel wheel 26. An endless chain 38 fitted with knife elements 43 passes around wheel 31 and around two further wheels 39 mounted on pins 40 projecting from plate 28. The knife elements co-operate with fingers 33 projecting from plate 28 as shown and are held in contact with with the horizontal supporting surfaces 34 of the fingers by a plate 45 carried by supporting plate 28. Support for the knife elements is provided by the forward. edge of a channel 37, and adjacent the sprocket 31 by a guide rail 47 formed on bracket 29. Each knife element may have two shearing edges which are so inclined that when one edge becomes worn the element may be removed and reversed. Alternatively a reversible plate with two shearing edges may be secured to each element, or again both sides of each element may be formed with shearing edges either of which may be brought into use by actuating suitable reversing gear adapted to drive the chain in the required direction.
