[Also in Division C7] An article for use at a given elevated temperature in a non-oxidizing environment is formed from a core and a coating each consisting of at least 95% of one of Ir, Ru, Mo and W, and separated by a barrier layer of a Pd-Au, Pd-Ag or Pd-Cu alloy, the compositions of the core and coating being correlated with the composition of the barrier layer so that one lies at or within a radius of 5% of one end and the other lies at or within a radius of 5% of the other end of two tie-lines each drawn on a ternary equilibrium diagram for the given elevated temperature wherein the apices represent Ir, Ru, Mo or W; Au, Ag or Cu; and Pd, the two tie lines being so selected that one end of each represents the same barrier layer composition. For example, an Ir clad Mo wire with a diffusion barrier of 60% Pd: 40% Au alloy for use in an electronic valve grid is made by hot drawing a cylindrical Mo billet inserted into a tube of the Pd-Au alloy itself inserted into an Ir tube to give a finished product having a Mo 0À03-inch diameter core with 0À002-inch thick diffusion barrier and 0À003-inch thick Ir coating to give a total diameter of 0À04 inch. A Ru-coated Mo electrode for an electric glass-melting furnace may similarly have a diffusion barrier of Pd-Au alloy. A core of W or Mo may be coated with Ir or Ru, and a core of Ru may be coated with Ir.
