Abstract
1,156,754. Soldering. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd. 20 Sept., 1967, No. 42774/67. Addition to 1,104,656. Heading B3R. A bit for a soldering iron formed from tungsten or molybdenum has a tip of or consisting predominantly of ruthenium coated with or superficially alloyed with palladium, platinum, copper or an alloy of any two or all three of these elements. The tip and methods of forming a coating or superficial alloy on it are as described in Specification 1,104,656 and may consist predominantly of ruthenium coated with or superficially alloyed with palladium or platinum or superficially alloyed with a coating of palladium diffused into the tip or coated with copper. The ruthemium of the tip may be alloyed with 0À25-2À5% rhenium. In an example, a disc is cut from a sheet of hot rolled and annealed molybdenum, is plated with palladium and heat treated at 1000‹ C. in hydrogen so that the palladium diffuses and forms a superficial alloy with the ruthenium. The disc is then electric resistance welded to a 45 degrees diagonally ground end on a molybdenum rod. In another example, a hollow ruthenium cone produced by pressing and sintering ruthenium powder is superficially alloyed with palladium as before and then brazed to the end of a tungsten rod using an alloy of 44% ruthenium 56% molybdenum in a high frequency induction coil.
