Abstract

1,167,032. Resilient couplings. SOC. NATIONALE DES PETROLES D'AQUITAINE. 28 Sept., 1966 [28 Sept., 1965], No. 43451/66. Heading F2U. In a resilient coupling for damping axial and/or circumferential and possible transverse vibrations in a shaft such as an oil drilling shaft and comprising male and female coupling elements 1, 3 fast with shaft portions 1, 2 and having inter-threaded helical projections 7, 12 separated by a vibration damper component 10, at least one of said projections is constituted by pieces which extend, e.g., one third of a turn, are arranged in prolongation of each other, and are rigidly fixed to the corresponding element. The projections 7, 12 are of rectangular crosssection and of such height that sufficient lateral clearance is left to permit slight misalignment. As shown, the elements 1, 3 each have two projections constituting a two-start thread. The vibration damper component 10 may be of knitted and compressed metal wires. A plurality of couplings may be provided for the same shaft, e.g. two couplings with opposite hand helices. In the drilling shaft shown, wherein the shaft portions 1, 2 are hollow, the male element is formed by the end of the shaft portion 1 and has two helical portions 7, 8 welded thereon. The female element 3 comprises a sleeve 4 which may be formed by forging and machining the shaft 2 or, as shown, keyed on the shaft 2, the key being held by a collar 6. In assembly, projection pieces 12a-12n arranged end-to-end and held between strands 10, 11 of damper material are placed between the male projection parts 7, 8. The female element 3 is then placed on the male element and the pieces 12a-12n are secured to the sleeve 4 by externally introduced screws 13. Finally, to prevent loosening, by simple unscrewing, an axial stop 14 is fastened to the end of the sleeve 4. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the male element projections are also constituted by pieces (15a)- (15n) arranged in prolongation of each other and secured to the shaft 1. In further embodiments the male element projections may be machined in the male element or soldered thereto. For correct positioning of the pieces 12a- 12n and (15a)-(15n), the abutting ends of the pieces are provided with co-operating bosses and cavities or axially or radially extending or cruciform tongues and grooves.
