Abstract

1,166,243. Tubular semi-permeable cellulose acetate membrane. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 30 Jan., 1967 [18 Feb., 1966], No. 7286/66. Heading B5B. In a process for manufacturing a tubular semi-permeable membrane, cellulose acetate casting solution contained in a vessel 1, is forced by a piston 3, through an annular orifice 7 defined by a conical portion 4 of the said vessel and a tube 6 which passes axially through the main portion of the vessel. A further tube 8 is contained within the tube 6 and its end extends below the said annular orifice. The tube is cast through the orifice into a water bath 5 and air supplied, under pressure, by the tube 6, dries a portion of the interior surface thereof. A mixture of air and water is withdrawn through tube 8, thereby causing a constant flow of water through the tube after it is formed and subsequent to the drying stage. The tube may then be treated with hot water to improve its properties.
