Abstract

1,165,929. Interlacing filaments. R. TORSELLINI. 17 Nov., 1967 [17 Nov., 1966], No. 52505/67. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] In the production of multifilament yarn, e.g. of rayon, cellulose acetate, polyamide, polyester, polyurethane, having little or no twist, at any stage between extrusion of the filaments and final take-up or by independent processing, running filaments under tension are interlaced at uniformly spaced points or zones along their length by the action thereon of a fluid, e.g. air, jet emanating from a nozzle and a part of which impinges on the side of the filament bundle remote from the nozzle in pulses acting on the filaments from different directions with a controlled frequency. In the device shown, a gas jet from nozzle 1 hits the filaments 2 and also enters a flow duct, defined by a recess 4, alternately through a branch 6<SP>1</SP> and 6, as the entrance to 6 or 6<SP>1</SP> is closed to the gas flow by the filaments. Gas emerging from branch 6 or 6<SP>1</SP> hits the underside of at least some filaments which undergo combined lateral (traversing) and (intermittent) rotational movements to obstruct the other entrance to 6<SP>1</SP> or 6 and thus reverse the direction of gas flow in the duct (thereby establishing the pulses) and effect interlacing. The frequency of oscillation of the filaments and, therefore, the interval between interlacing operations, is dependent on several factors, e.g. count of the filament bundle, filament tension, spacing of yarn guides between which the bundle is located, friction between filaments and guides, dimensions of the flow passages, but may be varied by use of interchangeable bodies 5 providing ducts of different lengths.
