Abstract
116,455. Wehner, R. K. Nov. 7, 1917. Multiple-chamber kilns or ovens.- Relates to a ring of gas-fired externally heated chambers specially for baking carbon electrodes for use in the manufacture of aluminium, and for other purposes. Fig. 2 shows a section through part of a battery of twelve chambers A<1> - - A<12> capable of being charged, warmed, fired, and cooled in succession. Only one chamber is being charged and another fired at any one time; the combustion products pass through the five next chambers to warm up their charges preparatory to firing them, and the air for combustion is heated in the five chambers which are cooling. Fig. 3 shows a section through the heating-flues of a chamber being fired, The chambers A' &c. are packed with electrodes in carbon dust, and are heated by burners C; gas and air are supplied by flues L, E respectively, and burn in the uptake flues B in the hollow walls separating the chambers, the combustion products passing through a top flue 0 and down flues D into the flues E, B, D of the next five chambers, and to the waste gas flue H. Dampers Q are fitted to divide the flue 0. When the firing in one chamber is complete, the connexions K, M, N respectively of the gas main F, the waste-gas flue H, and the air main J are moved on a stage. The air is supplied through the passage J" at the sixtli chamber from that being fired, the dampers Q being removed and the openings in the top of the flues being closed by covers. Plugs P" in the walls of the fifth chamber prevent the air from passing through the flues in the wrong direction. Other blocks P<111>, perforated or solid, are placed at the top of the down flues D to check the flow of combustion products in the flues of a chamber being fired. Spaces X<1> are filled with yielding material to allow for expansion.
